WHAT IS PILATES?
Pilates is a structured exercise system designed to develop CORE strength, improve body mechanics, realign and improve posture and balance and strengthen muscles to create a strong centered body able to function with demands of everyday life. Pilates was developed over 80 years ago by Joseph Pilates whose interest in physical fitness stemmed from a determination to strengthen his own body and improve his health after a sickly childhood. With a background in yoga, Zen meditation, martial arts and other fitness techniques, plus success as a gymnast, diver and boxer, Pilates developed a unique sequence of movements that worked the mind and muscle in harmony. Pilates exercises emphasize abdominal strength and core stability. Stabilization allows freedom of movement through the entire body and develops dynamic strength, coordination, flexibility and control. The Pilates system uses non-weight bearing exercises performed on a mat or on specialized equipment using spring resistance. Pilates exercises and equipment develop long lean flexible muscles.
